Kompuestos (Plásticos Compuestos S.A.), MAB-listed company and leader in the production of sustainable plastic compounds in Europe, has launched Okean®, a range of bioplastics with a clear objective: water biodegradability.
The Okean® product range can be fully biodegraded in sweet water under natural conditions, becoming biomass, carbon dioxide and water, and without leaving toxic residues. The three new bioplastics have been certified by the independent entity TÜV Austria with the "OK biodegradable WATER" certification, which follows the European standard UNE EN 13432, and recognizes the biodegradability of Okean® products in 56 days in sweet water to a temperature between 20°C and 25°C.
The innovative formulation of these new bioplastics offers an alternative to traditional plastic items at risk of ending up in rivers. Okean® products prevent the accumulation of plastic waste and ensure the conservation of rivers, lakes and any natural source of water and aquatic life. In addition, these products can be processed in standard equipment, offering a reliable alternative to traditional plastics. Similarly, thanks to its biobased composition (base of maize, potato, and other renewable sources), its production generates a smaller impact on the environment and contributes to a significant reduction in the carbon footprint.
Together with the creation of the compostable resin product range, the development of the Okean® product range is an additional step within the Global Commitment of the New Plastic Economy to which Kompuestos has joined to promote the generation of circular models that allows sustainable development. The Global Commitment and its vision of a circular economy for plastics are led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with UN Environment. Thanks to this global agreement, companies and governments are committed to changing the way we produce, use and reuse plastic.
